Yesterday, I got one of these for my house:

DSCF8023

I’d never seen or heard of such a thing until I came to Mali, but when I heard a colleague was selling hers, I jumped at the chance!

So, QUIZ TIME – what is is called and what does it do? Finally, why did we never have (or need) one in Benin?? Answers please…

Folk who have lived in this part of Africa may not answer (but let’s have some good educated guesses from everyone else!

It looks like a weather station, but I don’t suppose you’d have one of those indoors. Air conditioner?

At first I thought it was a fruit dryer, but since I have one here in Benin (not looking much like that, to be honest) I don’t think it can be. (And I can hardly say I *need* the fruit dryer!)
PS I like being able to see you taking the photo in the photo!

It’s a giant mosquito blaster.

Or maybe an electronic beehive.

It’s a basic air conditioning unit. You open up a little door and shovel ice into a metal basket. The plug powers a fan at the rear of the machine that proceeds to blow cool air into the room…obvious!! 🙂

don’t ask why…

Stephen was closest – it’s called a SWAMP COOLER. I’ll post something about how it works in the future!
